Wilson Love=Brick Wall
Wilson Love's junior season is taking off and he's only half way through it. He led the Mt. Brook defense with 12 tackles and a sack as the Spartans took down Gardendale 35-7 in a 6A region 6 win.
Love has received letters from several big programs showing interest but he still lists Alabama as his favorite. His older brother Tyler is a freshman on the Bama OL.

Kirkpatrick Honored
Gadsden City DB and no.1 recruit in the state was chosen as defensive player of the week by ASWA. Dre picked off three passes against Etowah last Friday. Apparently, one of the picks was returned for a touchdown but brought back because of a penalty.

Dre's Big Weekend
We posted a few days ago that Dre Kirkpatrick and teammate Kendall Kelly would be in Athens for the Bama/Georgia game. No news yet on whether the win had any influence on an early commit. They sure could use him against receivers like the Bulldog's Green.
Friday night, Dre had his biggest game of the season. He had three pics by the middle of the third quarter to help set up a 35-6 road win over Etowah.
His blog should update within the next couple days so we'll see what he thought about his trip to Athens.

McCarron and Saints get Housed
The Alabama commit and Saints starting QB AJ McCarron is starting to get roughed up as they get into region play. St. Pauls is the defending 5A state champ, but has to rebuild after losing several key players. This has been tough on McCarron who often tries to take the game over which leads to turnovers.
McCarron only had three completions for 55 yards and a touchdown in a 41-7 beating by no. 6 Russellville.
He did have one highlight on the night. In the second half, he got flushed out of the pocket and threw a 25-yard strike down the sideline in a dead run that ended in a 49-yard touchdown pass.

Hartselle 42, Cordova 27
Both teams top-ranked in their respective classes. Hartselle led by Marquez Jones' 217 yards and three touchdowns, proved to be too much for 3A Cordova.
Tim Simon led the way for Cordova with 141 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries.
10 carries!! The guy is averaging almost 14 yards a carry on the season. Load him down!
His counterpart Ryan Smith threw in a score in the second half.

Quinton Dial, the 308lb. DT for Clay Chalkville, faced constant double teams against no.2 ranked Tuscaloosa County. The Alabama commit still managed to power his way into the backfield to record one sack and two more tackles for loss. County's head coach Higgenbotham made sure to keep to the outside when they ran the ball. Dial's presence wasn't enough as they got owned, 42-21.

Dre Kirkpatrick Headlines List of In-State Recuits to Travel to Athens
Serveral 2009 recruits will be making the trip out to Athens to watch Bama take on Georgia. The duo most big programs around the country seem to be after, Kirkpatrick and Kendall Kelly, will make the trip. Also heading to GA is DT turned OL Brandon Moore and QB commit AJ McCarron. UA has proven to be the team to beat for all these recruits.
Florida has recently put their hat in the ring for Moore and McCarron considered Georgia before commiting to the Tide.

Some Top Games in Week 5
Some of the top ranked teams in the state play tough games this week. Here are a few:
3 McGill Toolen (4-0) @ 9 Davidson (4-0)
Keep an eye on the quarterbacks in this one. McGill's QB Cullen Wacker accounted for 250 total yards and two touchdowns against Daphne last week. His head coach Keith Powell says he's the best signal caller in the state. For Davidson, junior quarterback Jarrell Smith's all around talent has got them off to an undefeated start.
our pick: McGill. Their defense is better against the run.
8 Vestavia Hills (3-1) @ 6 Mt. Brook (4-0)
Here's a game that has to be won at the line with both teams featuring a talented backfield. Vestavia put up 300 yards rushing on Pelham last week behind running back Michael Brown. J.D. Marsh has been running all over defenses this season for Mt. Brook. The Spartan defense has also played well-posting two shutouts already.
our pick: Mt. Brook. Coach Yeager adjusts well when teams focus on Marsh.
3 Hartselle (4-0) 5A @ 1 Cordova (4-0) 3A
Cordova is hanging their season on the talented backfield duo of Tim Simon and Ryan Smith. They combined for 358 all purpose yards, two rushing TDs and two punts returned for touchdowns in a 40-7 rout of Northside. In the first half!! Hartselle is coming off a huge 24-14 win against no.6 ranked Russellville.
our pick: Cordova. I'm not picking against Cordova until I see somebody stop Simon/Ryan.
Other key games around the state:
4 (5A) Vigor (4-0) @ 5 (6A) Opelika (4-0)

Dre's Blog
The no.1 recruit in the state Dre Kirkpatrick has been maintaining a daily blog for gadsdentimes.com.
It's a nice look into the everyday life of someone being recruited by every major program in the country. Some of it is everyday stuff like tests and his son(i forget the name). There is also some interesting stuff about games and practices. He apparently hates to practice as he almost slept through one and admited to getting into with the coaches, which he apologizes to his team for in that day's blog.
He also writes about being knocked out of his wk 3 game and waking up in the hospital, something he is still going to physical therapy for.
Kirkpatrick also briefly mentioned he was on his way to Tennessee for the Florida game. Guess we'll have to check his blog out this Saturday on gadsdentimes.com under Dre's Diary.

no.4 Oxford/no.6 Gadsden City
The game of the week, Oxford/Gadsden City, didn't disappoint last night as they took a 14-14 tie into the final quarter. No. 4-ranked Oxford eventually pulled ahead 24-14 to win. With many watching the game to see uncommitted standouts-Dre Kirkpatrick and Kendall Kelly, another name has come up on the Titan Defense.
2010 Alert!
With offenses throwing away from the country's top DB prospect the corner on the other side of the field has been able to make a name for himself. Junior Denzel Huff has been getting more than his share of the action this season and making the best of it. Huff's name will certainly be one to watch as scouts and media having been keeping a close eye on the Titans this year. Huff had two interceptions and a quarterback hurry going into the half against no.4 ranked Oxford last night.
Denzel Huff. Remember the name.

The Vanderbilt-bound end had a stellar game against Moody tonight racking up 3 sacks, 2 tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery that led to a touchdown.
Vandy may have found a diamond in the rough. May runs a 4.57 40 and his head coach told me tonight that he has the capability to do this on any given night.
He'll need to add some weight to play in the SEC.

Vandy may have found a diamond in the rough. May runs a 4.57 40 and his head coach told me tonight that he has the capability to do this on any given night.
He'll need to add some weight to play in the SEC.
Gaston with Big Game at Receiver
Harris Gaston
LB/WR
Bessemer Academy
6-3, 215
commit: Auburn
Gaston had another huge game on offense last night as BA took down E. Memorial Christian 34-13. Gaston caught four touchdown passes, the longest a 70-yarder.
Gaston has really made a name for himself on offense this year even though AU will play him at LB. He's really been able to show off his hands and speed playing in a smaller class(AISA).
BA is ranked no.1 in AISA.

Florida Making a Push for Brandon Moore
Brandon Moore
OT
Carver-Montgomery
6-4, 310
uncommited
Alabama has been at the top of Moore's list for a while now. He keeps in regular contact with the coaches and plans to visit the Capstone for the Ole Miss or Kentucky game. Many have expected that Moore would commit to the Tide before the season was out. Now it seems that Florida has thrown their hat into the ring and offered Moore a full ride. He told rivals.com that he was "in shock" over the offer and is already making plans to visit.
Moore is ranked as the no. 10 recruit in the state by rivals.com and no. 4 on the Birmingham News Super Senior list.

Heavens hasn't had any problems making the transition from AISA to 6A ball. He off to a great start to the season and added to his solid totals Friday night against Hillcrest-Tusc with two touchdown catches of 76 and 69 yards. It wasn't enough for the win as JL fell 38-21.

Shawn Lynch with Another Big Game
Pelham receiver, Shawn Lynch, has had back-to-back killer games in the early part of his senior season. He had 10 catches for 139 yards against a solid Mt. Brook defense. It seems that he doesn't have a problem performing in big games.
JD Marsh has turned into the Rudy of Birmingham metro football. The kid is just loved by everyone: teammates, fans and writers. He got off to a slow start but finished with 160 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries.

Brandon Moore Handling Position Change
Ranked no.36 at DT by Rivals.com, Brandon Moore moved to the other side of the ball this season to play OT. The move is working as Moore is anchoring a solid line. Carver is 2-0 and rushing for over 200 yards a game.
Bama and Auburn are at the top of Moore's list. He said before the season that he will not make a decision until after the season. These are always the guys that get tired of the hype and commit half-way through the season.
Moore is 6-5, 310 lbs and ranked no.4 on the Birmingham News Super Seniors list.

Wilson Love Getting Offers
Mt. Brook DT and younger brother of Bama's Tyler Love, Wilson Love, is already getting overwhelmed with offers from around the country. It's no surprise that Wilson told the Birmingham News he's leaning toward Alabama. "I can't see myself anywhere else. Alabama is part of my family," Love said.
He hasn't been offered by Bama yet and admits a little interest in playing on the west coast.
At 6-4, 255lbs, Love runs the 40 in 4.75 seconds.

Tana Patrick Recruiting Update
Tana Patrick
LB
North Jackson (Stevenson)
6-3, 215
uncommited
Patrick has decided not to take any official visits until after the season. Bama and AU have been after him pretty heavy and are keeping close contact over the phone. Tenn, FSU and UNC have also offered.
He talked about speaking with Saban over the phone and admited he watched the Clemson game and liked what he saw on defense.
Patrick might have briefly scared off a few recruiters this fall when suffered a minor knee injury. The injury appears to have had little affect as he recorded a sack, a handful of tackles and even caught a touchdown in just a little over one quarter of play.
North Jackson is 2-0 so far this year.
Patrick is rated as a 4-star linebacker by rivals.com and is fourth on their list of Alabama recruits this year.

Jamar Travis Makes AU Visit
The four-star DT from W.S. Neal in Brewton, Al made an unofficial visit to Auburn to take in the Southern Miss game.
He seems pretty big on AU and the coaches seemed to have impressed more than any other coaching staff.
Still considers UA and AU as his top choices but is now getting recruited hard by LSU and Clemson.
He's 6-1, 298 with a 5.1 40.

Two Stars Might Miss Big Match-Up
Pelham makes the short trip into Hoover to take on Spain Park tonight at 7. The game may be without two of it's big names, one is out for sure.
SP's Darrius McMullin, 6-2, 276 lb Vanderbilt commit at DE, will miss at least half the season due to a knee injury he picked up after (what he claims) a chop block in the Homewood game last week.
Pelham's star DB, Alvin Hines is a game-time decision for tonight's game after a shoulder strain he contracted in their opener against Oak Mt. Hines has received offers from Auburn, Kentucky and Stanford.

Newest Alabama Commit
Nico Johnson
LB
Andalusia
6-3,226
Commit: Alabama
Nico decided to end the recruiting process early and chose Bama ahead of AU, Clemson, Florida and USC just to name a few. It looks like they'll start him outside and eventually move him into middle linebacker where he is most comfortable.
Johnson is still nursing some injuries he's had over the last couple years but he's managed to play through them even racking up 208 tackles over his last two seasons.
He is ranked no. 30 nationally on rivals.com and no.3 on the Birmingham News Super Seniors list.

AJ went 12 for 24 on 181 yards and threw three touchdowns in a 46-20 loss to Fairhope. No interceptions reported. Rough way to start the year for the defending 5A champs but McCarron seems to be finding his targets early.
